CHAPTER FOURTEEN

You learn a lot about a horse by taking the time to sit down and watch him. Your horse is communicating all the time – he’s speaking his language, not yours, and you need to take the time to learn what he is saying.

New York to Vienna

Within hours of the meeting at the Pilatos Building, Karen was heading to the airport to board a direct flight to Vienna. She had expected to have another night to prepare, but working with Lane was like being swept along by a flood, and it was easier to go with the flow than fight the current. It seemed he had organized the flights in advance of the meeting, so was arrogant enough to believe his plans would work.

The flight left New York in the late afternoon, and with time zones adjusted, would have them in Vienna by eight, local time, the next morning. It was organized for her without any input from her, and paid for by Lane. She tended to forget how wealthy his books had made him, she thought, as Sandy handed her the Business Class tickets on their way to the airport. Not surprising, she told herself wryly, since he liked to behave like a broke-arse cowboy most of the time.

As Pearce drove away with Sandy, leaving Karen standing at the airport with her carry-on luggage, she was hit by the realization that this was madness: she’d woken that day with an expectation of another day at work, not a flight to Europe with a man she barely knew. With a great exhale of breath, she resigned herself to getting on with the journey, and, forcing her shoulders back and chin up, she walked smartly to the departure area. She was glad that the Business Class tickets gave her a speedy trip through to the members’ lounge where she drank a glass of wine to settle her nerves. She wasn’t worried about flying, but there was a certain trepidation about traveling with a man who infuriated and intrigued her in equal parts.

She did not see Lane until after she’d been seated on the plane for ten minutes, and, finally, he boarded with the last of the passengers. It occurred to her that he might not turn up, and she wasn’t sure if that made her glad, sad, or downright furious, but he turned up, almost a head taller than the passengers around him, all of whom seemed to know him and competed for his attention. His blue jeans and checked shirt looked so country next to the urbane outfits of the rich and famous
